Resistance is Futile!: How the Trump-Hating Left Lost Its Collective Mind
a book by Ann Coulter
(our site's book review)
The Amazon blurb says that Since the day Donald Trump announced his presidential campaign, the left has waged an unhinged, hysterical war against him. Now, with her trademark candor and wit, Ann Coulter defends Trump's policies in the face of liberal hypocrisy and exaggeration.
Liberals used to pride themselves on their ultra-hipness; they mocked right-wingers for supposedly overreacting to headlines and believing in conspiracies. But as soon as candidate Trump emerged, 100 percent of the moral panic has come from the left. They think everything Trump does isn't merely wrong--it's a national crisis.

The Resistance are literally shaking because Trump is literally Hitler, says Coulter
While Trump governs mostly as a middle-of-the-road Republican, the so-called "Resistance"--journalists, comedians, movie stars, pro athletes, Twitter pundits, and even the Pope and Lindsay Vonn!--act as if they're all about to be marched off to Dachau. They are literally shaking because Trump is literally Hitler.

Contrary to Coulter's rhetoric, the Resistance is mostly made up of patriotic Americans who are trying to protect the nation from Trump's and the Republican's democracy wrecking ball
Meanwhile, Trump obeys even unconstitutional limits placed on his presidential powers by judges in Hawaii. He has submitted, however irritably, to a hyper-politicized Special Counsel, says Coulter, although we see no such thing. He meets with Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, and Diane Feinstein and showers them with praise. IT'S RIGHT OUT OF THE MEIN KAMPF PLAYBOOK!, says Coulter.
Coulter reviews the various elements of "The Resistance"—the pussy-hat brigade, the Russia-collusion witch hunters, the media alarmists, the campus hysterics, and more. They talk about Russia? They're the ones meddling with our democracy by trying to overturn the results of the election with relentless attacks and demented conspiracy theories. (Coulter isn't stupid, so why does she merely repeat Trump's alternative facts like "the Russia-collusion witch hunters"? Both she and Trump realize not only that it is the DOJ's job to look into this very serious subject—which they are doing admirably in spite of harrassment from Trump and Fox News. Why isn't she supportive of their efforts to keep Russian influence out of our elections so they're fair? The answer seems to be that she's willing to be disingenuous in order to stay in the good graces of Trump and the rightwingers at Fox News.)
The only permanent result of the Trump era may be our cultural institutions' total loss of credibility, says Coulter, who also says "the foundational symbol of the Resistance is the pussy hat," reminding everyone of Trump's crude crotch-grabbing boasts he made on NBC’s Access Hollywood.

"Nor did the media highlight the most hilarious part of Trump’s seduction technique. He took the lady [who he boasted about on Access Hollywood] furniture shopping. 'She wanted to get some furniture,' he says. 'I said, "I’ll show you where they have some nice furniture."' I’m sorry, I love the guy, but who would turn to Donald Trump for decorating advice? How much for this Taj Mahal–themed bedroom set?"

"When her husband was caught for the millionth time molesting the help, Hillary blamed a 'vast right-wing conspiracy.'"

In In Trump We Trust, Coulter says Donald Trump won the presidency by being a one-man wrecking ball against our dysfunctional and corrupt establishment. She is almost correct. But she needed to put on some glasses and look more carefully at what was being wrecked. Resistance Is Futile! refers to a fictional, virtually unstoppable, fascistic, authoritarian, advanced technological race of ruthless conquerors from the Star Trek TV and movie franchise. This communicates none too subtly that she is part of the P.R. wing of a ruthless, authoritarian tyrant. To be comfortable with that she'd have to have forgotten everything she knows and "sold her soul to the devil," as the expression goes. But this did not happen. She is a smart, educated and effective part of the Trump P.R. wing, although neither Fox News nor Coulter will be admitting that anytime soon. She is merely echoing the Trumpian party line, goosestepping in lockstep with the rightwing parade. Her book title—Resistance is Futile!: How the Trump-Hating Left Lost Its Collective Mind—is catchy and effective, but is about as tasteful as would be the title Trump—Hitler's Darling.

Trump and his G.O.P. accomplices are dismantling democracy, wrecking truth and people's faith in it, wrecking common decency by modeling racism, sexism, xenophobia, and misogyny to the nation, the world, to impressionable children, to other men
Coulter rightly says in In Trump We Trust: E Pluribus Awesome! that Trump's abandoned the GOP's decades-long commitment to a bellicose foreign policy, at a time when the entire country is sick of unnecessary wars. And she correctly denigrates the "PC Thought Police." Obama pushed political correctness too far (and Hillary was planning to be Obama 2.0 in a skirt), and exploited white guilt so that white men were seen as victimizers and minorities were seen as victims and affirmative action—an insidious form of racism—was seen as obviously a moral good because it screwed millions of whites out of jobs, promotions, and scholarships while less qualified minorities got favored. This must be good, because it screwed over evil white victimizers—right? Wrong—it was anything but good and it was divisive. All the hateful identity politics and racism was making white people sick, so an unexpected number of them voted for Trump because they were fed up with PC hell and being disadvantaged, enduring black-on-white racism, and Black Skin Privilege and the American Dream.

The PC Thought Police were only a step away, with the Obama-Clinton clowns at the helm; Trump rightly denigrates the foolishness of everything PC
Coulter: "We are facing a crisis in free speech, right now—the left has control of the mainstream media, Hollywood, Wall Street, Silicon Valley, the schools k through 12, and the universities." She is totally correct—the radical left's PC narrative needs to be dumped from all of these things. Let's return to free speech in the USA! Coulter recommended implementation of First Amendment standards to protect speech and expression on social media: "We need to apply the First Amendment to social media companies like Twitter, Facebook, and Google, because it is a public square, and there is precedent for that and it’s gotta be done, because this is really terrifying, and talk about chilling speech when they’re just throwing people off right and left." (Source: Ann Coulter: 'We Need to Apply the First Amendment to Social Media Companies', Robert Kraychik, Mixed Times)

We need to apply the First Amendment to the Constitution to social media companies
To the degree the Trump machine was going to stomp on the foolishness of everything PC as well as the phoney budget-busting wars, we are on board. The problem is Trump joined the murderous empire building fiasco soon after taking office. Obama did a similar flipflop and went kill crazy with drones soon after taking office. Apparently, legal murder was just too much fun to pass up. Dubya liked it as well. Speaking of that moron, Coulter says "Yes, liberals thought Bush was an ignorant boob, but they mostly expressed their disdain with dismissive eye rolls."

Bush was such an ignorant boob that he thought he was Dubya the Crusader when attacking Iraq, which went over great with U.S. religious fundamentalists
Coulter was a litigator with the Center For Individual Rights in Washington, DC, a public interest law firm dedicated to the defense of individual rights with particular emphasis on freedom of speech, civil rights, and the free exercise of religion. She doesn't believe in "the theory of evolution," which is a hell of a depressing admission for someone with a law degree. She describes herself as "a Christian first and a mean-spirited, bigoted conservative second, and don't you ever forget it." She is not an intolerant, naïve, close-minded bigot, but she doesn't really look at both sides of issues, which lawyers are supposed to do—maybe that is why she left her law practice. She is by definition a divisive person, pushing the conservative side of an issue as far as it can be pushed, showing no mercy to the godless liberals. She gets paid big bucks for being a bigot pushing Republican causes and beliefs.
Coulter has stated that the United States is a Christian nation. In U.S., 77% Identify as Christian, in polls, but many of those have no relationship with a church, so often they are just more comfortable checking that box than agnostic or atheist boxes. According to a new PRRI/RNS report, nearly six in ten Americans think America WAS a Christian nation in the past but is not one now (45 percent) or have never thought the U.S. was a Christian nation (14 percent). Only about one-third (35 percent) of Americans still believe America is and has always been a Christian nation—a notable drop from 2010, when 42 percent said the same. (Source: Is America a Christian Nation? Majority of Americans Don’t Think So, Daniel Cox and Joanna Piacenza, PRRI)
A 57 percent majority of Republicans surveyed agreed that Christianity should, in fact, be established as the United States’ national religion. This violates separation of church and state in the Constitution and infringes on religious liberty since agnostics and non-Christian religions would feel oppressed being a minority in a "Christian nation." No matter how many Christians live here, we are not a Christian nation. For the sake of people of all faiths and of no faith, we should hope we never become one, since when national identity includes religion, this usually morphs into nationalism, and then some form of fascism or socialism or authoritarianism—which is very un-American. Does Coulter say the United States is a Christian nation just to be contrary? Apparently, since she calls herself a bigoted conservative. All this brings up the question—does the U.S. really need more divisive forces in it, polarizing us and tearing us apart? Apparently, Coulter's answer to that is yes, since they are paying her the big bucks to do just that.

Coulter is right that the liberals' political correctness religion is a sad testament to victimology excess, bad thinking, and elite stupidity, although she uses other words to get these points across
Coulter implies that Obama was a lousy president, which we agree with. But then she said resistance (to Trump) is futile, but many of us disagree strongly: "Resistance Isn’t Futile. There are avenues for withstanding and rebuffing the coming onslaught. The mind games used by Trump and others like him are primarily designed to mislead, to confuse, and, most importantly, to suppress broad opposition to extreme inequality and the withering of democracy. That’s why their [Trumpsters] worst nightmare is the formation of strong coalitions that bridge stubborn cultural, racial, religious, gender, and class divides. Building and nurturing these coalitions must therefore be a top priority." (Source: The "Mind Games" of Donald Trump , Roy Eidelson)
Coulter says "As I predicted, The New York Times’ David Brooks was one of the first out of the box with a column on Trump’s 'authoritarian personality.' In a deadly earnest column, he warned that Trump was making 'the argument of nearly every demagogue since the dawn of time.'" It is sad she doesn't see Trump is using the demagogic playbook (the Mein Kampf playbook, in her words)—which has endless dangerous implications for our country—all bad. For anyone who claims to understand history, this is a monolthic oversight.

'Hillary’s claim to be part of the Resistance, followed by organized violence against conservatives, seems to alarm no one—apart from the people getting beaten up'; Coulter is right, the Antifa are a perversion of social justice

Coulter is right, the Antifa are a perversion of social justice
Coulter says "What if Trump supporters then went on a violent rampage, donning masks [like the Antifa] and beating up Hillary supporters? (She is referring to the Social Justice Warriors (SJWs) called the Antifa.) I think everyone would recognize that we were in the middle of a fascist uprising. But Hillary’s claim to be part of the Resistance, followed by organized violence against conservatives, seems to alarm no one—apart from the people getting beaten up."

But today, liberals love that income is wildly maldistributed, with them at the top. As long as they cut a check to Black Lives Matter and fly a rainbow flag, they can live like nineteenth-century robber barons
Coulter says "The bedrock of the old-style Democratic Party was economic fairness. But today, liberals love that income is wildly maldistributed, with them at the top. As long as they cut a check to Black Lives Matter and fly a rainbow flag, they can live like nineteenth-century robber barons."

1889 in the Gilded Age: This is the Senate of the Monopolists by the Monopolists and for the Monopolists
Coulter has no good answer to Trump's 'enrich-the-rich-and-screw-the-nonrich' tax plan. Greedy Oligarchs unwilling to pay their fair share is inexcusable. Talk about this and she changes the subject. Saying 'The left has no complaint with the rich—they are the rich!' is ludicrous (there are as many greedy rich on the right side of the aisle as there are on the left side). "Hillary spoke to liberals’ deepest beliefs when she called Trump supporters 'deplorables.'"

Hillary spoke to liberals’ deepest beliefs when she called Trump supporters 'a basket of deplorables'
See the stuff Coulter is Ignoring about the evils of the radical right—there is no end of greedy rich on the right side of the aisle [facing the dais in Congress]:
- Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right
- The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned Into a War on American Ideals
- The Party Is Over: How Republicans Went Crazy, Democrats Became Useless, and the Middle Class Got Shafted
- Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America
- Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump
- The Despot's Apprentice: Donald Trump's Attack on Democracy

Getting conglomerates to pay their fair share in taxes (the opposite of Trump's greedy tax scam) will be like taking a banana from a 900 pound gorilla—we must do it very carefully
Coulter is right about Antifa and about the left having control of the mainstream media, Hollywood, Wall Street, Silicon Valley, the schools k through 12, and the universities. She is totally correct—the radical left's PC narrative needs to be dumped from all of these things. Let's return to free speech in the USA! She rightly bemoans that kids are taught that white men are seen as victimizers and minorities are seen as victims, and affirmative action is an insidious form of racism. And she is right the country is sick of unneeded wars. But otherwise she mostly just toes the rightwing party line, keeping her Fox News job secure. Resistance is Futile!: How the Trump-Hating Left Lost Its Collective Mind is an interesting book but is a bit too predictable.
